Seniors George Smith & Matt Kohn Summer All Stars

At the Crab Claw Classic Baseball Event August 8 at Joe Cannon, George Smith Jr. and Matt Kohn Represented Falcons Baseball!

More than two hundred high school baseball players worked out at Joe Cannon Stadium near Annapolis Maryland Thursday August 7th, vieing for a roster spot in this prestigous event. After numerous defensive drills, sprints and hitting sessions and discussion  among the some of the states top coaches, George Smith Jr. and Matt Kohn were named two of the Mid Atlantic regions top 42 players. The designation earned them spots on Saurday nights  7th Annual Mid Atlantic High School Baseball Classic held at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanoer Md.

The contest dubbed the Crab Claw Classic, was started seven years  ago by local MLB scout Lou Holcomb to help high school ball players showcase their skills in front of potential college suitors. Friday was an all day tryout session geared toward individual position players that included over two hundred athletes from as far south as Southern Virginia to as far north as Massachusetts along with players from Pennyslvania, Delaware and all over the state of Maryland.

George Smith Jr. played for the Gold Claws of the South , and Matt Kohn represented the Black Claws of the North in a ten inning game that ended in a 14-14 tie. George  went 2 for 5 at the plate with a double opposite field and a bases loaded 2 RBI single to center field. He also scored on a wild pitch.  Smith thrilled the crowd (which included over 30 college coaches from around the country) with two sensational diving catches of would be line drive hits into shallow centerfield . Matt Kohn played solid defense in right field with several put outs and a laser like throw to the plate that narrowly missed getting the runner who executed a textbook perfect hook slide to beat the tag of the out stretched catchers glove. Matt also recorded a stolen base for the North along with an infield hit, beating  out a throw by the shortstop. Matt was 1 for two, with a walk and a run scored.

Matt and George are the the first Falcons to be selected since Collin Stevens '07 was selected in 2006. Congrats Matt and George!  For more information about this event, please click here: www.diamondrecruiting.com

Sunday's 50 Anniversary Family Picnic and HR Derby

Thanks to everyone who came out to help at the picnic Sunday April 27 and to celebrate GC 50th anniversary. A home run derby was held at Bottegal field.  Long Ball hitters were Art Raimo, John McCarthy, Ms Dean, Mrs. Jenkins, Maddy Bowman, Bryce Galey, Matt B, Michael Butler, Jelani Jenkins, AJ's sis, and many more that showed mad skills hitting  33 mph hangers served up by our coaching staff and varsity players.  Mark Hamilton will contiinue to kick footballs. Michael Bata....showed  skills in the infield too.

Joel Rosenblat topped out at 70mph on the radar...with a little work in the offseason, there may be baseball in your future. Thanks to Lauren Costello for making this a great day at GC for students, alums, friends and families.

GC Travels to Southern Md, Win 11-6 Over SM Ryken

Take Route 5 to Leonardtown on any given day and you will find God's country. One day removed from April Fools day, the GC Falcons played their game without tricks, hoaxes, or hype. Blue collar workmanship was the order of the day, as drawn up in the Falcons practice sessions. The weather was foggy, misty, the mood focused. Each player's resolve to win was evident, as coaches bantered about past games and what was to be. The bus trek ended as a spectacular view of the water next to the ball field was revealed. April 2nd, all roads led to Leonardtown for the Falcons baseball team.
