Falcons Give Cadets "Turf Toe" 4-3, Go to 5-0
Falcons starter, Jake Taylor, RHP, 2010 (Radford) looked sharp through 5 innings with several strikeouts battling against opposing starter, Nick Howard, RHP/SS, 2011, (UVA). Several Falcons' key hits fortified Jake's effort, including a shot by Kevin Stein, 3B, 2011, an RBI double by Brandon Grove, 1B, 2010 (UNCG), a line drive hit by Carter Bidwick, SS, 2011, a RBI backside grounder by George Smith, Jr., OF, 2010 (LaSalle), a RBI bunt by TJ Brockway, C, 2011 to advance the runners, a strong shot up the middle by AJ Bowman, DH (2010), and 2 singles and a solo shot over the RF fence with 2 out in the 6th by Matt Kohn, OF, 2010 (Johns Hopkins) 3 for 4, 1 HR (2) to add insurance to the Falcons' lead.
The Cadets made a late comeback move down 4-2 with a grounder up the middle by Drew Farber, C, 2010, (UNCW) to make it a one-run game leading the Cadet's charge going into the 7th. Kevin Doherty, LHP, 2012 provided an inning and a half of solid relief, and Kyle Hamby, OF, RHP, 2011 came in as the closer in the final inning, striking out Mike Bowie, OF, RHP, 2010 (George Mason) with bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th to seal the victory. The Falcons defense was flawless throughout the game, with several key put outs by Carter Bidwick and his counterpart, Nick Trotta, 2B, 2010, and Kevin Stein, each handling the speedy artificial surface very effectively.
Saturday's victory earned the Falcons a #4 ranking by The Washington Post, ahead of #6 St. Johns. Next up for the Falcons is Bishop O'Connell, Tuesday, March 30, 4 pm, but it looks like rain.
