Falcons Handle Knights in 5, 13-1

On a rainy, chilly, overcast day at Bottegal Field, the Good Counsel Falcons continued to build on their lead atop the WCAC conference with a 13-1, 5-inning victory over the visiting Knights of St. Mary's Ryken High School. Senior, Matt Kohn, OF (Johns Hopkins) began the assault with a 2-run homer over the fence in left field. Falcons' bats were in full force throughout the game with strong hitting performances and a flurry of RBIs by several GC batters, including junior, TJ Brockway, C, senior, George Smith, Jr. OF, RHP (LaSalle), senior, AJ Bowman, DH (St. Francis), senior, Kyle Porter, OF (FL Gulf Coast CC), Brandon Grove, 3B (UNCG), RBI doubles by senior Jake Taylor, 1B, RHP (Radford) and junior, Carter Bidwick, 2B, RHP.

Junior, Andrew Gottlieb, RHP was solid as the starting pitcher, while crafty senior reliever, Michael Stuart, LHP, teased Knights' hitters with a couple of strong innings in relief. Senior closer, Chris Descalzi, RHP was also effective bolstered by incredible defensive support. All Conference center fielder, George Smith, Jr. provided his version of a GC "Web Gem" making the circus catch (so far) of the year in the top half of the 5th while sprinting to the fence, diving face-first into the gravel of the warning track to catch a ball, barely missing a collision with the fence post. GC fans, players, and coaches held their breath as Smith emerged from the rubble and relayed the ball back to the infield with barely a scratch, protecting an extra base hit and possible run. Coach McGowan called Smith's play, "one of the 'sickest' catches I have ever seen!"

Next up is the biggest game of the year thus far as the #1-ranked Cadets of St. John's visit #3 ranked Good Counsel for a rematch of the top two teams in the conference and perhaps in the region. Game time is 4PM Tuesday.
