Good Counsel Down Riverdale Baptist, 12-1

In addition to the brutal WCAC schedule (as many as 5 teams in the WCAC have been ranked in the top 10), the Falcon’s have proven that they will take on any challenger, including the top teams in Baltimore and Virginia. On Friday afternoon the Falcon’s traveled to Prince Georges County to face the always tough and well-coached Riverdale Baptist team.

Riverdale Baptist has earned the right to be named along with the best teams in the country. They have produced many local and State championships, in addition to sending well over thirty players to the pro ranks over the years.

The Falcon’s knew that this would not be an easy game. In addition to facing Riverdale on their field the Falcon’s found out that they would be facing Riverdale’s ace. Good Counsel countered Riverdale’s Ace with Senior Matt Russell. In addition to being a team captain and a fearless competitor, Matt leads the pitching staff with a 1.38 ERA.

The game began with Sophomore Billy “Clutch” Henig striking out. Although Billy struck out, he had a great at bat. He saw seven pitches, fouling off several, and this gave the team a look at what the pitcher had and how he was throwing. From that moment on the Falcon’s put on a “hitting clinic”, scoring twelve runs to end the game in six innings.
Several players had a great day at the plate, but a few stood out. Steve Ulakey went 3-4 and continues to be a terrific clean up hitter by driving in five runs.

Kevin Jones is still the best three hole bunter around, and Billy Henig and Ryan Bottigal are a devastating one, two. Matt Russell pitched and excellent game, keeping the Riverdale players off balance with a variety of pitches and pin point accuracy. Coach McGowan said afterwards, "I knew that Matt would be able to keep them off balance, his stuff is very good… when his back door curve is working he is very difficult to hit. Matt can also throw any of his pitches for strikes. That makes it very difficult for hitters to try and pick up a pattern."

As good as Riverdale Baptist is, it is rare to ten run mercy rule a team of this caliber. Way to go Falcons.
